Riveting vs Bolting: Choosing the Right Structural Joint
For structural joints, the choice between rivets and bolts comes down to cost, inspection, and load path. Rivets are permanent and require access from both sides during installation. Bolts offer easier assembly and disassembly, making them ideal for maintenance and field connections.
Rivets are still used where vibration and fatigue are concerns, because the installation process fills the hole completely and creates a preload that resists loosening. However, riveting is labor-intensive and requires skilled workers. For modern fabrication, high-strength bolts are usually faster and more consistent, especially when using torque or tension control.
A key practical difference is inspectability. Bolted joints can be visually checked and torque-tested, while riveted joints need ultrasonic or other non-destructive testing to verify integrity. In seismic or dynamic applications, slip-critical bolted connections are often preferred because they can be designed to transfer load by friction rather than bearing.
In practice, use bolts for anything that may need future disassembly, where quality control is critical, or when you need a predictable preload. Choose rivets for legacy repairs, extreme temperature environments, or when weight savings from a flush surface matter. Always verify that the selected fastener matches the material grade and coating for the environment to avoid galvanic corrosion.
