Material Choice: The Hidden Lever for Cost and Performance
Material selection isn't just a spec on a drawing. It decides how your part behaves in the field and what it really costs to make. Too often engineers pick a familiar material without weighing tradeoffs.
Take a simple bracket. Steel gives you strength and low raw cost, but it adds weight and needs corrosion protection. Aluminum cuts weight and resists rust, but it costs more per pound and can fatigue sooner. Plastic is cheap and light, but it creeps under load and loses stiffness at temperature.
The real cost is not the material price tag. It includes machining time, tooling life, finishing, assembly, and logistics. A pricier alloy that machines faster can lower unit cost. A lighter material can cut shipping and installation costs. A more durable grade can slash warranty repairs.
So before you finalize, run a total cost analysis and test prototypes in real conditions. Ask your supplier for alternatives and get their input early. That one decision can make your design both robust and economical.
