Set Workbench Height for the Task
Most shop workbenches are built at a generic height, often around 36 inches, which suits no one perfectly. The right height depends on what you do most. For precision work like assembly or electronics, your elbows should be bent around 90 degrees with your forearms roughly parallel to the bench. For heavy hammering or chiseling, a lower bench lets you use your body weight instead of just arm strength.
To find your ideal height, stand relaxed with your arms at your sides and bend your elbows to 90 degrees. Measure from the floor to your fingertips. That is your general work surface height. For heavy work, lower the bench by two to four inches so your shoulders and back can push down effectively. For fine work, raise it slightly so your eyes are closer to the part without bending your neck.
A simple way to adapt is to build a sturdy platform to stand on for precision tasks, or use a rolling stool for lower positions. Better yet, make your main bench adjustable or build separate benches for different operations. If you have to pick one height, default to the elbow rule for your most frequent job. Your back, shoulders, and wrists will thank you, and your accuracy will improve more than you expect.
