In many shops, work cells are laid out in a straight line. That forces operators to walk back and forth between stations, adding travel time and fatigue to every cycle. The fix is simple: curve the line into a U shape.

A U-shaped cell brings the start and finish points close together. One operator can handle multiple stations inside the U, moving only a few steps instead of crossing a long line. This cuts walking waste, reduces idle time, and makes it easier to spot quality issues.

The U layout also improves communication. When everyone is in a tight loop, they can hand off parts directly and call out problems without shouting. It supports one-piece flow because you can adjust the number of operators as demand changes.

Try this: map your current cell and measure operator travel per shift. If you can shorten the distance by wrapping the stations around, you will likely see a 20 to 30 percent gain in throughput. Just keep the inside of the U clear and place tooling within easy reach.
