A surface plate is the foundation of most shop-floor inspection. It gives you a true, flat reference plane that everything else is measured against. Without it, you can't trust your height gauges, indicators, or sine bars.

The plate's job is simple: to be as flat as possible. Flatness grades from AA to B tell you how tight that surface is. A grade AA plate is accurate to a few millionths of an inch, making it the reference for calibrating other tools. Even a shop-grade B plate is good enough for most work if you treat it right.

But flatness only matters if the plate is stable and clean. Dirt, burrs, or a warped plate will transfer error straight into your measurements. Always wipe it down with a clean cloth, use a cover when it's not in use, and check it regularly with a level or a straightedge.

When you use a surface plate, you're effectively turning the workpiece into a one-sided reference object. By flipping the part and using the same datum, you can measure parallelism, squareness, and runout without complex fixtures. That's why a good plate is the first thing you buy and the last thing you ever replace.
