When sourcing electronics enclosures, the IP rating is often the first thing you look at, but it's also the most misunderstood. The rating is derived from specific lab tests, not real-world conditions. An IP67 box might survive a dunk, but that doesn't mean it will handle high-pressure washdowns. Always check the exact test definitions in IEC 60529 before matching them to your application.

The real trap is that many manufacturers list a rating based on the empty enclosure, not the final assembly. Cables, connectors, and threaded holes compromise the seal. If you don't specify how those are sealed, your final product may fail. Ask your supplier for a detailed drawing of the sealing interface and torque specs for the cover screws.

For a concrete practice: request the test report and verify the gasket material. Most failures stem from compression set or chemical incompatibility. If your enclosure sees heat or oil fumes, a standard nitrile gasket may not cut it. Specify a silicone or fluorosilicone gasket and confirm the hardness rating.

Finally, do a simple water test on your own prototype. Mount your actual circuit board, route cables through the glands you'll use, and spray it from all angles. That catches 90% of the problems you'll miss in spec sheets.
