Keep Cutting Tools Sharp Longer: Storage Tips
Cutting tools lose their edge even when idle if stored poorly. Moisture and physical contact cause rust, chipping, and dullness. A little care in storage pays off in longer tool life and lower replacement costs.
Before putting any tool away, clean it thoroughly to remove chips, coolants, and oils. Then apply a light coat of corrosion-preventive oil or spray. This barrier keeps humidity from reaching the cutting edge.
Store tools in a dry, temperature-stable environment. Aim for relative humidity below 50 percent. Avoid storing near exterior walls or windows where condensation can form. A simple desiccant pack in the drawer or cabinet helps.
Never let tools touch each other. Use individual plastic sleeves, foam inserts, or dedicated tool holders. For carbide inserts, keep them in their original trays or use a partitioned box. This prevents edge chipping.
Finally, inspect your stored tools every few months. Wipe off any residue, reapplying protection as needed. Rotate stock so older tools get used first. These habits keep your tool inventory ready for production.
