Converting a manual machine to CNC on a budget is about spending where it matters. The core is the motion system: stepper motors, drivers, power supply, and a controller. Skip the expensive servo options initially; modern steppers are adequate for most hobby and light production work.

First, size your steppers based on the machine's requirements. For a small mill or lathe, NEMA 23 motors with 2-3 Nm torque are a safe start. Pair them with drivers that can handle at least 4 amps per phase, and choose a power supply voltage around 36-48 VDC. This combination gives good speed and torque without breaking the bank.

Next, connect the motors to your leadscrews. If your machine has acme screws, use them as-is with anti-backlash nuts. Ball screws are nicer but add cost; only upgrade if you see backlash issues that hurt precision. For the controller, a simple USB or parallel port breakout board with GRBL or LinuxCNC works well. You'll need to tune acceleration and speed in software, so start conservative.

Finally, don't forget limit switches and an emergency stop. These are cheap but crucial for safety and homing. Mount them before you power up the system. With this approach, you can get a functional CNC conversion for under $500, depending on the machine's condition and what you already have.

Test each axis individually before running a full job. Measure actual movement with a dial indicator and adjust steps per unit in software. A bit of patience here saves a lot of scrapped parts later.
