In 2D cams, the follower moves in a single plane perpendicular to the cam shaft. The cam profile is a curve on a flat disc. In 3D cams, the follower moves along or around the cam axis, producing more complex motion. The most common 3D cam is the cylindrical cam, where a groove is cut into a cylinder.

The key difference is how you control follower motion. With a 2D cam, you only control radial displacement. With a 3D cam, you can control both axial and rotational displacement. This allows for more sophisticated motion profiles, like indexing and complex timing.

From a manufacturing standpoint, 2D cams are easier to produce on a CNC mill or wire EDM. 3D cams often require a 4-axis or 5-axis CNC machine, or a specialized cam grinder. This makes 3D cams more expensive and harder to inspect.

In practice, choose a 2D cam for simple reciprocating motions where space is limited. Choose a 3D cam when you need precise intermittent motion, like in automated assembly machines. Understanding this trade-off will save you time and money.
