Choosing between a clearance and interference fit comes down to what the joint must do. A clearance fit leaves a small gap between parts, allowing them to slide or rotate freely. Use it for shafts in bearings, pistons in cylinders, or any assembly that needs to move or be disassembled often.

An interference fit, also called a press fit, makes the shaft slightly larger than the hole. The parts are forced together, creating a tight, permanent bond that transfers torque or axial loads. Use it for gear hubs, bearing outer races, or bushings that must not slip.

Your decision should also consider service temperature. If the parts will heat up during operation, a clearance fit can become tighter as the shaft expands, potentially seizing. An interference fit can loosen if the housing expands more than the shaft. Think about the materials and their thermal expansion rates.

Practical rule: if you ever need to take it apart without damaging it, go clearance. If you want it to stay put under load and vibration, go interference. When in doubt, standard tolerance tables (like ISO fits) give you proven starting points. Just remember that a clearance fit can wear over time, while an interference fit is difficult to adjust.
