Looks Right in CAD. Why Won’t It Bend? 🤔
A sheet metal part may have no geometric interference and a valid flat pattern—but that doesn’t guarantee it can be formed with the available press brake and tooling.
Three common limitations:
🔧 Tooling interference: On deep U-shaped parts or inward-facing flanges, previously formed sections may collide with the punch or machine during bending.
🔄 Bend sequence: An earlier bend may obstruct a later operation, making the part difficult to position, bend, or remove.
📏 Short flanges: In conventional V-die bending, a flange that is too short may not have enough support across the die opening for reliable forming.
Before releasing the design, check more than the finished shape: Can the tooling reach each bend? Is the bend sequence feasible? Can the finished part be removed?
Reviewing these points with your fabricator early can help reduce design revisions and rework.
💬 Have you encountered a part like this? Did you change the design—or the tooling and bending process?
